What a giant leap by Jeavestone !
Whereas Mind The Soup is a promising, yet somewhat inconsistent compilation of songs from the group's early career, Spices, Species and Poetry Petrol is a similar jump onto another, higher level, that Gentle Giant made when they after their eponymous debut released Acquiring The Taste. There is another similarity with ATT: the title track is a shortish scherzando instrumental, and co-incidentally Jeavestone's new album also contains a short instrumental called Erg, that brings Giant's tune to mind.
On this album, Jeavestone brings back all the nice and good things from their past influences and mix them with modern-sounding rock music with a lot of small, interesting details, nice tone colours of acoustic instruments, playful melodies, powerful riffs, fine vocal works, even humour (The Power Of Swankle™) - and out of the hat jumps an album that any prog fan longing for the good old Seventies but rather hoping for a better 2000's will find as a most satisfying effort. There is more jazzy feel than on the debut, an expansive variety of instruments used with purpose and skills, and Jeavestone's first proper multi-movement epic - and yet they are rocking out, like on Plastic Landscaper or Your Turn To Run.
With Spices, Species and Poetry Petrol, Jeavestone raise the bar for themselves to such heights that if they can go further from this, I'll guarantee their next album five stars. In the meantime, you shouldn't waste your time: get this fantastic album into your hands now.

What a wonderful CD i have on my hands and soon in my player. The cardboard covers are great. Quite psycedelic themes and there is a hilarious little comic book too (it's about the adventures of the line-up. In the first issue the pages are on wrong order because someone in the label messed it up I think).
Ok, the disc is in the player now and I'm excidet! ¡Quela Puente! is the first track and it starts with nice melodica(?) and flute. Throuh the album there is a intelligent use of other instruments too like a oboe, a vibraphone, a clarinet and the strings. What an harmony.
There is only a little minus and it is Erg (0:39). It isn't bad but sounds little bit like a filler.
I think that Spices, Species and Poetry Petrol is more jazzy and progressive than the first Jeavestone's album Mind the Soup. Very mature performance from this finnish group with a lot of potential and skill.
(Sorry about my probably bad english but the album is still great!)

Jeavestone on suomalaisella musiikkikentällä jäänyt aivan syyttä pimentoon. Yhtyeen progressiivinen rock'n roll on äärimmäisen taidokasta, mutta sävellykset on nostettu soittotaidoilla elvistelyn sijaan ykkösasiaksi. Spices, Species & Poetry Petrol jatkaa siitä, mihin taidokas debyytti Mind The Soup jäi. Se on entistäkin melodisempi, mutta omalla tavallaan myös kierompi kokonaisuus.
Albumin keskivaiheille sijoittuva Daytime Escape / Veijo The Rattlesnake kiteyttää yhtyeen vahvuudet tiukasti yhteen pakettiin. Bändi pystyy hempeilemään kauniisti, mutta myös tylyttämään tiukoilla rockriffeillä, joita se uskaltaa junnata niin pitkään, että radiobiiseihin tottunutta kuulijaa hirvittää. Täyteläinen soitinmaailma kruunataan vielä monipuolisilla stemmalauluilla ja avot.
Von Hertzen Brothers on nostanut progressiivispsykedeelisen rockin maallikoidenkin tietouteen. Jeavestonella on varmasti mahdollisuudet samanlaiseen menestykseen, jos tähdet vain ovat bändille suotuisat. Yhtyeen groove on niin hyvä, että vaikeat biisirakenteet eivät tunnu mämminsyönniltä, vaan uppoavat alas kuin huurteinen olut kesäpäivänä .

Ihr freakiger Auftritt auf dem Würzburger Freakshow Artrock Festival hat nicht nur dem lockeren und mitgerissenen Publikum viel Freude bereitet, sondern auch der Band selbst. Ihre erste CD war danach wie vom Erdboden verschluckt und nur durch blöd endlose Recherche zu bekommen. Schön, dass die Band, die das Event stolz auf ihrer Webseite listet, jetzt ein echtes Label im Rücken hat, dass nicht nur die Band in vielen Wohnzimmern ankommt, sondern auch, ähm, ja, in noch mehr Wohnzimmern.
Am neuen Werk hat vermutlich Artrock-Freak Charly, nun, zumindest Teilschuld. Wie er damals durchs Auditorium seines Festivals hüpfte und "Rock'n'Roll" brüllte, in Obelix-Hosen, da hat die Band sich gewiss gedacht, hier haben wir Prog, da haben wir Rock'n'Roll. Auf der einen Seite sind wir zwar Künstler, auf der anderen Seite kommen wir aus Finnland, in unseren Adern fleucht und kreucht Wikingerblut. Da müssen wir also authentische Musik machen und die nennen wir fix: Prog'n'Roll.
Wohl getan! Wie die Musik zeigt. Es rockt zum Mähneschütteln, es jazzt und folkt, es ist komplex und aufwendig und unterhaltsam und herausfordernd, kurz gesagt: das ist brillante, Quatsch, GEILE Musik!
Viele Kleinigkeiten gehen erst am Ohr vorbei, so etwa das kurze "Au" der Banddame, der jemand wohl auf den Popo geklopft hat und sie dann mit verschmitzt-grimmigem Gesicht angrummelte. Klingt!
Die Musik ist unglaublich facettenreich. Alles zu erwähnen ist nicht drin, Überraschungen müssen bleiben: nur soviel: Song Nummer Drei ist abgedrehter Zappa/Keneally-Stuff zum Schmunzeln, da gibt es Rock'n'Folk'n'Prog mit allen möglichen Drehungen und spaßigen Erlebnissen, die künstlerisch grandios in Szene gesetzt werden. Wenn wir denken, das wäre alles nur ein großer Spaß, irren wir, meint Old Wabble. Die Band schläft jetzt sehr gut, nach der anstrengenden, endlosen Arbeit. Sie haben fast perfektionistisch jede Sekunde mit dem besonderen Extra ausgefallener Ideen und schräger Motive angefüllt, und dabei eine exzellente Handwerklichkeit an den Tag gelegt, dass die technische Einspielung nur brillant genannt werden kann. [Der Mantei wieder!]
Song Nummer Vier: nach der akustischen Einstimmung folgt ein CSN&Y-Chorgesang, der das schlaffe Außengewebe zum Gänsehäuten bringt. Ein Cello drauf und noch einmal von vorn. Wahnsinn! Diese fünf Minuten mit Geigen, Cello, Gitarre und Jazz-Rhythmus unter der Fuchtel von melodisch grandiosem Bass und dezentem Schlagzeug ist den Prog-Orden in Silber wert! Darauf folgen 8 Freak-Minuten, Prog-Folk, die mit pseudoorientalischem Kauderwelsch beginnen und dann ein unglaublich harmonisches Motiv entwerfen, das glatt auf den echten 70ern stammen könnte.
Jeavestone bewahren sich auf dem neuen Werk ihren burschikos charmanten Humor, den sie auf der Würzburger Bühne offenbarten, hingegen auf der ersten CD noch nicht so definitiv drauf hatten. Jazziges, wunderschöne Gesangsharmonien, Balladen, freakiger Prog'n'Roll, mal ein flotter kurzer Kracher zwischendurch - hier ist immer was los, zwar wird's gegen Ende der Platte gemütlicher und ruhiger, aber es bleibt gut. Das 10-minütige "The Brief" ist nicht allein der Höhepunkt, so was gibt es immer wieder auf der Platte.
"Spices, Species and Poetry Petrol" ist nicht nur extravagant ausgefallen, was hin und wieder auch mal zu Gunsten düster-heller und gar lieblicher Motive wegfällt und Streicher zur akustischen Gitarre präsentiert, sondern auch sehr sympathisch und beglückend. Vor allem: es rockt! Und für Freunde ausgefallener Instrumente sei angemerkt: es gibt Vibraphon!

Jeavestone made it! This Finnish band has produced an unbelievable album full of happiness & musical surprises. Band's own definition of their music is prog'n roll. I'd add the word psychedelic. Someone would easily add a few more, so rich is the musical terrain of this album.
Finnish prog bands have been mostly known of their gloomy atmosphere with a recognizable "Finnish" sound. This music is far from it. This music is international - or should I say multi-international. The range of apparent musical influences is impressive. Too often this ends up with a catastrophe but Jeavestone has managed to keep their sound fresh and original.
Somehow the small Nordic cities seem to be capable of producing interesting prog. A good reference point is Swedish newcomer, Black Bonzo from Skellefteå , a small town at the cost of the gulf between Finland and Sweden. Jeavestone comes also from a small costal town of Kalajoki, just at the opposite side of the gulf, in the more-or-less-nowhere-part of Finland. Beardfish or Moon Safari are also examples of this phenomenon.
The musicians are young, all under 25. The singer & guitarist Mickey Maniac mentioned in a radio interview that his main influence is The Beatles, not the prog giants. According to him they simply play what they feel. All compositions come out intuitively without any conscious musical role models. This is hard to believe but still I'm tempted to do so.
The playing is naturally amazing throughout the album. There are woodwinds and string arrangements and what not. Jim Goldworth's singing is also superb which is really surprising, having heard the guys talk in the radio where they were just shy guys from the country, not being able to say anything too interesting in their 3-word sentences. Music is definitely their thing, not talking.
About the music itself: The Plastic Landscaper is a full-blooded psychedelic song, actually a perfect summer-hit. I'd Be Your Weakness sounds much like CSNY, only that the band - according to Matti Kervinen from the record company - has never listened to them. Daytime Escape/Veijo The Rattlesnake is the absolute peak of the album - an 8-minute mixture of peace and ecstasy ending with a GG-ish nirvana. Rapists Tango and Your Turn to Run are absolute killers. The last one is loaded with changing moods and astonishing surprises. The finishing song is a mini-epic devided in three parts. All this forms a fine work of art, the kind that only a complete fool would ignore.

Hämyisän hulvatonta progepsykedeliahippailua.
Merkit ovat pahat: hipinnäköisten tyyppien ylivärikkäisiin kansiin on pakattu levy, jonka aitoon 60-luvun psykedelia-henkeen vaikealukuisesti kirjatut biisinnimet ovat hassuja.
Itse kappaleet kertovat esimerkiksi Swankle -nilkankiillotusaineesta ja Veijo-nimisestä käärmeestä. Lukuisien oboe-, viulu- ja tiesmikä-vieraiden lisäksi bändissä on huilisti ja sen musiikissa on folk-vaikutteita.
Vastoin kaikkia tässä valossa luotuja olettamuksia Jeavestonen toinen levy on oikein mainio.
Spices, Species and Poetry Petrol kauhoo korville progressiivista psykedeliaa ja hassutupakilta tuoksahtavaa sumuilua runsaskätisesti.
Bändin ote on kuitenkin ehtaa asiaa. Vaikka biisit ovat vaihtelevia tunnelmiltaan, eteeriset osiot rullaavat yhtä vaivattomasti kuin fuzz-pitoiset rock-osuudetkin. Huilu ja rikas "ylimääräinen" instrumentaatio tuovat soitinpalettiin mehukkaasti lisäväriä, lähinnä iloisia ja kepeitä kukkaissävyjä.
Kappaleiden elämänmyönteinen tunnelma välittyy hienosti ilmavan luomuotteen sekä paikoin huuruisempaa Beatlesia tai alkupään Pink Floydia muistuttavan meiningin ansiosta. Kuivakan perinnetietoinen tuotanto kytkee levyn oivasti ajattomuuden jatkumoon.

Värikäs proge-tulokas
Kalajoen hipit yllättävät kokeellisella prog’n roll -ilottelullaan.
Tyylilajistaan huolimatta Jeavestone ei sorru tekniseen kikkailuun. Pääosassa
ovat melodiset kappaleet, moniääninen laulu ja laajalla soitinarsenaalilla
toteutetut sovitukset. Yhtye ei ole tekemässä pastisseja esikuvistaan
Jethro Tullista tai Gentle Giantista. Soundi on raikas ja mielenkiintoinen.

Uusprogea
Niin sanottu uusproge kärsii yleensä sydämettömyydestä tai nostalgiasta.
Dream Theaterin kaltaiset metallivaikutteiset yhtyeet nojaavat liikaa kikkailuun, kun taas perinteisyyteen pyrkivät bändit kuulostavat usein jonkin vanhan suuruuden jäljennökseltä.
Kotimainen Jeavestone tarjoilee toisella levyllään enemmän nostalgiaa kuin kikkailua, mutta ensisijaisesti yhtye tekee vaikutuksen omaleimaisen humoristisella otteella. Siitäkin huolimatta, että stemmoissa soi Yes ja siellä täällä kuuluu Wigwam.
Jeavestone ei toki ole puhdasta progea, vaan soinnissa on paljon esimerkiksi folk-vaikutteita. Olennaisinta on kuitenkin musiikin soljuvuus ja kepeys, jotka eivät ole progessa itsestäänselviä hyveitä.
Levy sisältää moniosaisia, rytmisesti mutkikkaita kappaleita, joiden koukeroisuutta ei heti huomaa. Bassonsoitto on harvinaisen eläväistä ja huilusoolot kauniita. Levy päättyy oikeaoppisesti kymmenminuuttiseen järkäleeseen, vieläpä hyvään sellaiseen.

Värikästä kesäprogea
Jeavestone-yhtye on tehnyt raikkaan kesäprogelevyn. Spices, Species & Poetry Patrol on Kalajoelta kotoisin olevan yhtyeen kakkosalbumi.
Levy-yhtiö käyttää määritelmää prog 'n' roll. Kriitikko voisi puhua myös Beatles- ja the Who -henkisestä, ilahduttavan leikkisästä asenteesta raskaitakin elementtejä sisältävän musiikin tekoon.
Jeavestonen polveilevissa kappaleissa piristää erityisesti sähkö- ja akustisten soittimien, mukaan lukien puupuhaltimet, lomittelu. Spices, Species & Poetry Petrolin kuuntelun jälkeen olo on hilpeä kuin hyvän ilotulituksen päätteeksi.

Hippihappoilua ja rokkenrollia
Kotimaisen väriläiskän Jeavestonen näkemyksellinen esikoislevy Mind the Soup vei orkesterin parisen vuotta sitten kesällä keikalle Saksaan Burg Herzbergin progefestivaalille.
Ajan kuluessa maine on maailmalla kasvanut, joten tuore levy julkaistiin Suomen lisäksi Saksassa, Itävallassa ja Sveitsissä.
Jo Spices, Species and Poetry Petrolin psykedeelinen kansitaide kertoo, mistä on kyse. Levyn raidoilta tulvii riemastuttavaa hippihenkeä, jonka värittäjinä toimivat mm. folk, jazz ja suoraviivaisempi rock.
Kiekolta voi paikoin kuulla yhteyksiä brittiyhtye Incredible String Bandin usvailuihin. Esimerkiksi selloilla, viuluilla ja kauniilla lauluharmonioilla kyllästetty I´d Be Your Weakness viittaa vahvasti Mike Heronin ja Robin Williamsonin aivoituksiin.
Tasavahvasta bändistä erottuu edukseen Angelina Galactique, jonka huilu- ja kosketinsoitintyöskentely värisee ehtymättömästi.

Merkillisesti nimetty Jeavestonen kakkosalbumi on hankala tapaus myös sisällöltään. Tyylillisesti musiikki pysyy linjassa halki levyn. Ohjelmassa on kevyesti progahtavaa rockia muutamilla asianmukaisen asiattomilla pärähdyksillä maustettuna. Nilkankiillotusainemainos (!) The Power of Swankle™ lähestyy psykedelisyydessään jopa Gongin ja Frank Zappan hallitsemia sfäärejä, mutta muuten liikutaan turvallisimmilla vesillä. Yleisesti Jeavestonen ilmaisu muistuttaa ennemmin Kingston Wallia ja Von Hertzen Brothersia kuin Daevid Allenin happokestien tuotoksia.
The Plastic Landscaper olisikin VHB:n tekemänä takuuvarma hitti, mutta astetta tuntemattomamman bändin hyppysissä sen potentiaali jäänee valitettavasti hyödyntämättä. Jeavestonen kohdeyleisö taas arvatenkin innostuu enemmän vaikeammin avautuvista raidoista, kuten levyn päättävästä trilogiasta Innocence/Voices of the Shadows/The Relief.
Spices, Species and Poetry Petrol on ammattimaisesti soitettu ja suurimmilta osin myös sävellyksellisesti edustava albumi. Rakennepuolessa tosin olisi parantamisen varaa. Levyn alussa esitellään monenkirjavaa materiaalia, mutta loppupuolella tunnelma muuttuu käsittämättömän yksitotiseksi. Onneksi yhtyeen pistämätön melodiantaju, joka ilmentyy parhaiten huilun noustessa liidaamaan, tekee vähän vaisummistakin biiseistä kuuntelemisen arvoisia.

Jeavestone didn’t lie back in those years, but worked even harder on their sounds, arrangements and on this production. Immediately I noticed a Yes-influence, especially the second track, “the plastic landscaper” as in many of the arrangements (vocal arrangements, the electric guitars making extra touches to the rhythmic melody), while they admit to also a touch of Gentle Giant. But also Zappa in its influence, like on the third track, serious cabaret rock, with a touch of humour. The arrangements are worked out well, almost like symphonic rock, arranged with the same intentions as in between how and why Yes or Zappa arranged their music. Also flutes and melodica and a bit of cello take part of the arrangements.

Aus dem FlowerPowerPopArt-Cover geht es ja nicht auf den ersten Blick hervor, aus welcher Ecke der Welt Jeavestone kommen. Und nach dem Durchhören ihrer CD ist man auch nicht viel schlauer. Klingt verdammt nach US-Progressive Rock, ein wenig nach Crosby Stills Nash & Young, manchmal aber auch wie britischen Yes. Und auch die Teilnehmerliste gibt wenig Aufschluss: Namen wie Mickey Maniac, Tommy Glorioso oder Angelina Galactique beispielsweise gehören ja wohl eher ins Reich der Comicfiguren. Das geschulte Auge entdeckt dann aber auf der Rückseite des Covers einen kleinen „hirvi” (finnisch für Elch!). Und an dieser Stelle wollen wir das Rätsel dann mal auflösen: die Spur führt ins fränkische Fürth zu dem dort beheimateten einzigen finnischen Plattenladen südlich der Ostsee namens Kioski. Bevorzugt dort steht „Spices, Species & Poetry Petrol” im Regal. Und nebenan in Nürnberg befindet sich das dazugehörige Label „Nordic Notes”. Finnen sind es also, die sich prächtig verstellen können. Gehandelt mittlerweile als SF-Geheimtipp und wirklich ein cooles Teil. Ausgebuffter Retro-Tüftelrock, wie wir ihn seit Urzeiten nicht mehr gehört haben und ihn eventuell nur noch von unseren Vorfahren überliefert bekommen, die Gentle Giant, Van der Graaf Generator, Babe Ruth oder vielleicht noch King Crimson als Vinyl gehortet haben. Jeavestone sind also die heutige Version davon, eine Weiterentwicklung von Schrubberbeats, heißen Gitarren-Soli, Flötengesäusle und mehrstimmigem Chor-Gesang. Verschachtelte Intelligenz-Musik, der man die Freude am Patchwork-Musizieren in jeder Sekunde anmerkt. Wer den Glauben an komplexe Rhythmik, anspruchsvolle Texte und knifflige Kompositionen noch nicht verloren hat, sollte hier unbedingt mal reinhören. Die finnischen Kenner der Materie halten schon länger grosse Stücke auf Jeavestone.

Würde Jethro Tull heute das Handtuch werfen wollen, sie könnten es getrost dieser 5köpfigen Band aus Finnland überlassen. Damit soll nicht suggeriert werden, dass Jeavestone keinen erkennbaren Eigencharakter besäße. Mit ihrem zweiten Werk zeigen sie, dass sie durchaus über die Fähigkeit verfügen 40 Jahre Rockgeschichte, auf ihre Weise, sinnvoll miteinander zu verbinden – seien es Folk oder Psychedelic Ausläufer, progressive, gar jazzige Elemente oder schlicht eingängiger Pop, die sie mit jugendlicher Frische und einer Brise Humor in Szene setzen. Die verquirlten und doch luftigen Arrangements kommen gerade rechtzeitig zum baldigen Sommerurlaub, den wir nun auch im musikalisch erwärmten Finnland machen können. If Jethro Tull would like to throw in the towel, they could confidently leave it to this 5headed band from Finnland. That didn’t mean to suggest Jeavestone wouldn’t offer an identifiable style of their own. With their second creation they show, that they in fact achieved the ability to embrace 40 year of Rock-History in a sensible way – if you think about the Folk or Psychedelic branches, progressive, even jazzy elements they use or just catchy melodies, set in scene with a youthful freshness and a certain sense of humour. These nice mingled and airy arrangements come right in time to hoist sails for our starting summer vacation spending now in a musically heated up Finland. What was Monty Python once pointing out so memorable: Finland, Finland, Finland – the country where I quite want to be...

Die Band JEAVESTONE gründete sich 1999 in Finnland und veröffentlichte 2001 eine EP und 2005 das Album "Mind The Soup". Die Band bezeichnet ihre Musik als Prog'n'Roll. Die neun Stücke auf dem zweiten Album "Spices, Species And Poetry Petrol" könnten auch aus einem (freilich noch aufzuführenden) Progressiv-Rock-Musical stammen. In Finnland ist anscheinend alles möglich. Wirklich schlimme Flötensoli und jazzige Vibraphonparts lassen mich an üblen Art-Rock sowie Batikhemden denken, und ich möchte schon abfällig Hippiegedudel schreiben, ja, wären da nicht auch schwere Gitarrenriffs und die überraschenden Samples. Irgendwie klingt immer etwas schief. Die Stücke werden an den richtigen beziehungsweise falschen Stellen unterbrochen. Die rockenden Parts rocken, dank kurzer Breaks mit Flöteneinschüben und/oder Punkriffs, nicht richtig, und auch die hippiemäßigen Teile werden wiederum durch Samples unterbrochen. Also eine gewöhnungsbedürftige, aber sehr ansprechende Mischung aus Carlos Castaneda, Winterscape one, Glam, Easy Listening und Progrock.

1970-luku on taas täällä - ainakin jos uskoo kolme vuotta sitten Mind the Soup
-levyllä debytoinutta Jeavestonea. Kalajoella perustettu bändi kuvailee itse
musiikkiaan "muun muassa brazil-jazzin, folkin ja stonerrockin kimppahalaukseksi". Stonerrockia ei levyllä kuule, mutta progea sitten senkin edestä.
Jeavestone tekee itsetarkoituksellisen mutkikasta, joka on musiikillisesti lähellä
väkivaltarikollinen Jukka Tolosen 1970-luvun tuotantoa. Eli Spices, Species & Poetry Petrol tarjoaa tiuhaan vaihtuvia tahtilajeja, kitarasooloja ja hullunkurista asennetta.
Siksi se vaatii kuuntelijaltaan kärsivällisyyttä ja huumorintajua. Tarttuvia kertosäkeitä tältä levyltä on aivan turha etsiä. Rumpalin taiteilijanimestä on kyllä annettava erityis maininta: se on Kingo.

Als das Album bei uns ankam, dachten wir angesichts des typischen Flowerpower-Artworks der CD, Iron Butterfly oder Jefferson Airplane hätten sich zu einer neuen CD aufgerafft. Doch weit gefehlt: “Spices, Species and Poetry Petrol” stammt von einer erst 1999 gegründeten Band. Ihre Remeniszenz an die 60/70er-Jahre bei der Gestaltung des Covers allerdings ist ganz bewusst, denn ihre Musik könnte durchaus von oben genannten Bands stammen.
Klangprägend in der Musik von Jeavestone sind Querflöte und Gitarren. Eine stilistische Einordnung ist hier aber verdammt schwer. Von ätherischen Passagen bis zu knallharten Metalsounds ist hier die volle Bandbreite geboten. Manchmal greifen sie zu jazzigen Soli oder groovenden Beats. Nichts für Langweiler oder engstirnige Puristen also. Dass Jeavestone auf dem “Freakshow Artrock Festival” auftraten, versteht sich irgendwo von selbst.
Das Album erfordert mehrmaliges Anhören, wobei jeder Durchgang mehr Freude bereitet. Kurz: Progressive-Art-Rock mit 70er-Jahre-Flair von einer sehr talentierten jungen Band.

I really looked forward to Jeavestone's second album, and I must say it's even
beyond what I expected. The first two tracks are the same kind of prog'n'roll as
on "Mind the Soup", but then it gets more experimental and also proggier than
ever before. Their sense of humour is still something that makes the band special -
just check out the cover and comic booklet - and even a track like "The Power of
Swankle", which is anything but serious, is fun to listen to repeated times.
The arrangements, with harmony vocals, flute, strings, vibes, etc, are very
well-done and often offer positive surprises.
"Spices, Species and Poetry Petrol" is a fairly challening album - one reason
is all the key changes in the melodies - and it took me a few listens before I really
got it. But now, it feels like it will be one of those albums that I can listen to
for years.
The album is warmly recommended, and a must-have for fans of classic prog with
a sense of humour.

Hei! Das ist die bisher freudigste Überraschung in diesem
Jahr was Musik betrifft. Einen Riesensprung nach vorne hat diese Band gemacht.
Und ihr zweites Album hier ist nun der Beweis, dass selbst in dem kleinen
finnischen Bade- und Ferienort Kalajoki am Bottnischen Meerbusen knapp 300 km
südlich des nördlichen Polarkreises bewusstseinswerweiternde Substanzen in
Gebrauch sind. Hippies aus Pohjanmaa, wer hütte das gedacht! Aber eigentlich
dann doch nicht so abwegig. Nur in der Ruhe und Abgeschiedenheit Nordfinnlands
hat man wahrscheinlich genug Zeit und Muße, alte Platten von Jade Warrior,
Caravan, Jethro Tull, Gentle Giant und vielleicht auch Yes so akribisch zu
studieren. Ein bisschen Tyrannosaurus Rex bzw. T.Rex sind auch noch dazwischen
geraten bei diesen Studien. Während die erste EP von Jeavestone 2001 noch nach
stinknormalem wenig inspiriertem Hardrock klang und das erste Album 2005 zwar
mit mehr Ideen, aber einer kruden Mischung aus modernem Prog und antiquiertem
Acid Rock aufwartete, ist diese neue Scheibe ein sprudelnder Quell von
fantasievollen Klängen, Melodien und Rhythmen. Kraftvolle, robuste und dennoch
groovende Glamrock Nummern wechseln mit folkloristischen, mehrstimmig
gesungenen Psych Pop Schätzchen und mit verschachtelten aber angenehm
unprätenziösen Progrock Gebilden. Schöne Melodien, einfallsreiche Arrangements,
abwechslungsreiche und aufwändige Instrumentierung mit Flöten, Klarinetten,
Saxophon, Streichern und allerlei Schlagwerk und Tasteninstrumenten neben der
üblichen Standardausrüstung einer Rockband. Die ganze Platte ist wie das Cover,
sehr bunt. Ein kleines Comic Heftchen mit einer gezeichneten Suche nach einem
verloren gegangenen Musiker liegt der CD bei. Leider bisher kein Vinyl. Die
einzelnen Tracks sind wie gesagt recht unterschiedlich, sowohl in der
stilistischen Prägung wie auch in ihrer Länge. Doch fügt sich alles zu einem
wunderbaren Gesamtklangbild, das man in einem Zug hören sollte, auch wenn sich
einzelne Tracks sogar zu Singles eignen würden. Neben dieser musikalischen
Vielfalt und Abwechslung ist es vor allem die Leichtigkeit und der leise Humor,
der aus einigen Songs spricht, was mir gefällt. Unwillkürlich muss ich an Frank
Zappa denken, der ja auch kein Kind von Traurigkeit war. Die Finnen hier aber
verfügen wohl vor allem über ein gehöriges Maß an Selbstironie. Progrock kann
also auch witzig sein und unbeschwert. Je öfter ich die Platte höre, desto
deutlicher wird sie zu meinem Favoriten in 2008. Dagegen sind die Fleet Foxes
dann tatsächlich prätenziös, weil ihnen dieses hörbare Augenzwinkern fehlt,
wenn ihr wisst was ich meine. Diese Platte gehört auf Vinyl, Christian. Unbedingt!
